About Me
Ian J. Gerard attended Western University from 2007 - 2011 where he earned his Honour's Bachelor degree in Medical Biophysics. Under the supervision of Dr. Giles Santyr at the Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario, he wrote his undergraduate honours thesis entitled, "Determining Whole Lung Perfusion Using Dynamic Hyperpolarized 129-Xe Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy". He was awarded the Western Gold Medal for his undergraduate work. In 2011, he began his graduate studies at McGill University in the Medical Physics Unit towards completion of a CAMPEP accredited Master's degree in Medical Physics. Under the supervision of Dr. D. Louis Collins at the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre he completed his Master's thesis entitled, "An analysis of tracking error in image guided neurosurgery". Additionally under the supervision of Dr. Collins, Ian completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in 2018 entitled, "Improving the accuracy of image-guided neurosurgical tools for brain tumour resection. His research has continued focusing on improving the accuracy of image guided neurosurgery with improved registration techniques as well as the use of intraoperative ultrasound imaging. He completed his M.D., C.M at McGill University in 2020 and is currently a Foundations resident (previously PGY1) in Radiation Oncology at the McGill University Health Centre.
